Keeping It Safe, Keeping It Real, Keeping Cameras Out of Yoga Practice

At UnEarthed, we are dedicated to fostering a warm and inviting environment for everyone who enters our space. Creating a sanctuary for personal growth and healing is a priority, and one of the ways we achieve this is through a no-photography policy during our yoga classes and community events. We understand that the presence of cameras can be intrusive and may lead to feelings of discomfort for some guests.

While capturing moments during classes is increasingly common, it’s essential to pause and reflect on how this practice aligns with the needs of our community. Many participants attend our events and classes seeking solace and a nurturing atmosphere. We must respect their personal space and privacy, particularly for those who are on their own healing journeys and may be dealing with the aftermath of trauma. By maintaining a photography-free zone, we strive to honor the safe haven we aim to create and ensure that all our guests feel secure and supported.

As a regular at community yoga practices, I’ve certainly experienced the discomfort and invasiveness of being photographed during sessions. While it’s completely understandable that some instructors wish to capture memorable moments for social media and marketing, this can discourage individuals from joining group classes altogether. Even with good intentions and granted consent, the presence of a camera interferes with our capacity to fully immerse ourselves in our yoga practice and engage with our experiences openly and authentically.

At UnEarthed, our yoga practices prioritize sensation and experience rather than shape. We aim to cultivate a space that encourages deep self-reflection, honoring the beauty of yoga by being fully present in each moment on the mat. Bringing cameras into the mix inadvertently redirects focus from internal feelings to external looks—definitely not our goal!

Everyone in our classes and at our events is on their own beautiful healing journey. As instructors and healers, we have the incredible privilege of honoring these unique paths and safeguarding the stories of everyone involved in our practices and events. In a world that can feel a bit overwhelming at times, let’s create a warm space where everyone can fully embrace and express their authentic self, without distraction.
